This design provides an efficient method to extract maximum energy from a supercapacitor, and provides the required voltage and current to the RF subsystem. GPRS or GSM systems need peak currents of up to 2 A for several 100 us. LTE transmissions require peak currents of up to 1 A.
Does a supercapacitor need balancing?
For high-duty applications, more sophisticated supercapacitor balancing is required. The backup power supply circuit could be made less complex and take up less space if a single supercapacitor is employed instead of two or more. Such an arrangement eliminates the need for supercapacitor balancing.
