SQM (Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A.) reached a long-term agreement to supply lithium products to LG Energy Solution (LGES). As pat of the agreement, which runs from 2021 to 2029, SQM will supply battery-grade lithium carbonmate and lithium hydroxide for the production of high-quality cathode materials for EV battery cells.

LG Energy Solution began its research on lithium-ion batteries in 1992. It launched the development of lithium-ion batteries in 1996 and entered into the battery market with the first mass-production of laptop batteries in 1999. Batteries have been adopted for a variety of applications ever since.

LG Energy Solution has increased the battery sizes and is currently developing the 46-series battery. LG Energy Solution uses NCM-based cathode materials that allow high-capacity energy storage. We became the world’s first to mass-produce batteries consisting of NCM 523 cathode materials for electronic devices in 2007 and have been producing batteries consisting of NCMA cathode materials with a nickel content of at least 85% since then.
How much lithium does lges supply?
The amount of supply is equivalent to powering 2 million all-electric vehicles. The latest agreement replaces the previous agreement LGES clinched with the Chilean lithium supplier with an increase in the volume of the supply by nearly threefold compared with the outstanding supply of 36,000 tons, LGES said.
Is LG a bigger battery than 1865 & 2170?
LG Energy Solution is currently developing the 46-series, a line larger than the 1865 and 2170 batteries. The 46-series cylindrical battery offers more energy, as it can hold more active materials. In particular, nickel content is being increased for higher density and battery capacity.
