Four-point bending of photovoltaic glass

Four point bending (EN 1288-3) includes effects of the edges and allows to determine two different values of bending strength: for the strength of the surface area including the edges (overall strength) or for the separate strength of the edges (edge strength). Tensile bending strength is the most crucial property of structural glass. An evaluation procedure of tensile bending strength is specified in EN 1288-3 using the four-point bending (4PB) tests. However, the effects of boundary conditions of the supporting and bending rollers on tensile bending strength have not been well documented.

What is a four point bending test?

The four point bending test described in EN1288-3 (Fig. 1) consists of a 1100 mm by 360 mm glass plate that is held by two support rollers spaced 1000 mm apart. Two bending rollers spaced 200 mm apart press on the glass from the other side. Between the rollers and the glass, a layer of rubber is used for protection.

Do glass bending test results differ from actual bending tests?

The present paper will show that for tests with high deformation, which becomes more relevant for smaller glass thickness and chemically strengthened glass, these results differ vastly from the actual behaviour of the glass in the four point bending test as it is performed in most industry and lab settings.

How to determine tensile bending strength of monolithic glass?

Based on this, the EN 1288-3 standard specifies a 4PB test procedure to determine the tensile bending strength of monolithic glass. A dimensionless factor k, depending on the fracture origin, thickness and central deflection of the specimen, is proposed to consider the nonlinear effects under large deflection , .

What is the tensile bending strength of fully tempered glass?

Table 2 gives the experimental results of the ultra-white fully tempered glass specimens. A mean effective tensile bending strength of 166.3 MPa was obtained, which satisfied the requirement of the characteristic bending strength for fully tempered glass, 120.0 MPa .

What is the tensile bending strength of annealed glass?

For the ultra-white annealed and fully tempered glass specimens, tensile bending strengths determined by the standard method in EN 1288-3 and the modified method are roughly comparable, with all differences being less than 5%, as presented in Table 3.

Why was four point bending scheme chosen?

Four-point bending scheme was chosen due to pure bending zone at the middle in the plate instead of the three-point bending scheme where the maximum bending moment is a single point of peak. Fig. 3.
