What is a refractive index?
The refractive index is used to characterize the refractive properties of the glass material. We offer solutions for its determination. Two central material properties of optical glasses and crystalline materials in the UV, VIS or IR spectral range are their refractive index and their dispersion.
What is the refractive index of multicomponent glass?
The refractive index of the obtained multicomponent glass was equal to nD = 1.807, the dispersion coefficient vD = 39.4, and the density ρ = 4.15 g/cm 3; Tg = 675°C and CLTE = 75 × 10 – 7 K – 1. The visible and near-IR range transmission exceeds 80% (Fig. 6 ). Fig. 6.
Why do lanthanum glasses have a high refractive index?
The refractive index of glasses, including lanthanumcontaining glass, is usually increased by introducing into their composition highly refractive additives, such as oxides of niobium, titanium, barium, etc., on which, however, severe restrictions are imposed because they increase the crystallizability of the glasses.
What is the wavelength-dependent refractive index of dense flint glass?
The wavelength-dependent refractive index of the dense flint glass N-SF11 is shown in Fig. 2. The refractive indices of the flint glass from 400 nm to 650 nm were measured against two different reference prisms as shown in Figs. 2 (a) and 2 (b), for borosilicate glass (N-BK7) and optical silica glass (SQ) materials, respectively.
How do you find the refractive index of a sample glass?
Here, the refractive index of the sample glass is given by where δ is defined as for which x is the deviation of the beam exiting the sample glass measured perpendicular to the optical axis, and L is the distance from the end facet of the prism pair to the diffuser screen as shown in Fig. 1 (b).
What are the applications of high-refractive glasses?
The wide range of applications for highly refractive glasses, such as optical lenses in digital cameras for smart phones, lenses and fibers for endoscopes, and optical systems for recording and storing information, suggests the enormous potential of glasses of this type [ 2, 3 ].
