What are supercapacitors & EDLC?
Supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors and electric double layer capacitors (EDLC), are capacitors with capacitance values greater than any other capacitor type available today. For those of you who don't know much about super capacitors, here is a little bit of fun theory: Super capacitors act like any other kind of capacitor, only they can store tremendous amounts of energy. Many capacitors that you'd have seen in audio circuits have capacitances such as 470uf or 680uf (micro farads).

How do you measure the capacitance of a supercapacitor?
Supercapacitors have such large capacitance values that standard measuring equipment cannot be used to measure the capacity of these capacitors. Capacitance is measured per the following method: Charge capacitor for 30 minutes at rated voltage. Discharge capacitor through a constant current load. Measure voltage drop between V1 to V2.
What does L1 & L2 mean in a supercapacitor?
L1= Load life rating of the super capacitor (typically 1000 hours at rated temperature). L2= expected life at operating condition. Tm= Maximum temperature rating of the supercapacitor. Ta= Ambient temperature the supercapacitor is going to be exposed to in the application. Vr = rated voltage of capacitor. Warning.
Are there different methods of balancing a super capacitor?
There are many different methods of balancing for super capacitors, but it seems that everyone has a different preference. This information can be hard to find. As well, most methods of balancing will limit the charge and discharge limits of your super capacitor.
