Will Portugal support 500MW of energy storage capacity by 2025?

The country’s Ministry of Environment and Energy has launched a competition for €99.75 million (US$107 million) for grid-scale energy storage projects at the transmission and distributed-scale.

Galp, a Portuguese energy company, has announced plans to build a 5 MW/20 MWh battery storage system in Portugal, in collaboration with Powin. The system at one of Galp’s solar plants will enable it to adjust its PV production profile and meet its energy requirements. This project marks Powin’s first venture in Europe.

Global energy storage supplier Powin LLC and Portuguese integrated energy company Galp have partnered to install a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Algarve, Portugal. The 5 MW/20 MWh battery system will be built at one of Galp’s solar power plants near the village of Alcoutim.
