With the growth in the use of micro inverters, I’m starting to get more and more emails asking: can micro inverters be used in off grid (or hybrid) solar power systems? The short answer is yes they can! In fact a number of micro inverter battery backup systems are already operating here and abroad.

What is an off-grid inverter?
Modern off grid systems use a single inverter/charger (AKA off grid inverter). Although it took a while, around ten years ago some manufacturers realised that they could already convert the solar (or other source) input to AC with Grid Tied inverters, so to simplify things a bit more AC Coupling was born, and it looks like this:

An off-grid inverter works by converting DC power from your solar panels and battery bank into AC power for your house. This process involves the inverter 'inverting' the DC electricity from the batteries, effectively creating a small electrical grid.
What is a micro inverter system?
In off-grid systems, the microinverter modules are also equipped with charging facilities to divert DC power directly from the panel before it is converted to AC. This is a newer system that uses the best of both central and micro-inverters. A single micro parallel inverter has separate channels for each panel wired to it.
Is solar a grid-independent microinverter?
The fact that solar is grid-connected is one of its main drawbacks. This means that if the grid goes down while the sun continues to shine, your solar system will produce nothing.
