Chemical energy storage power station in Bergen Norway

The Energy Park is the world's first location with infrastructure for permanently storing CO 2 underneath the seabed. Located by a fjord outside of Bergen, this is a unique location for establishing climate-friendly industry with focus on the lowest carbon footprint. By 2010, 17% of the world''s electricity production should come from gas-fired power plants. Statkraft is involved in the construction of three projects, including a combined heat and power station at the Mongstad refinery near Bergen, Norway.

Where will CO2 be stored in Bergen?

CO2 captured from hydrogen production will be deposited at Northern Lights, 800 meters from the hydrogen facility, and then transported through pipes for permanent storage in reservoirs. In addition, the Energy Park is located a short distance from the main maritime route and Ågotnes, where the future Bergen public harbor will be located.

Could the Northern Lights project encourage a new industry in Bergen?

The Northern Lights project could lead to the growth of a new industry in Bergen. Through the Northern Lights Project (consisting of Equinor, Shell and Total), Norway is planning to capture, transport and store large volumes of carbon dioxide (CO2) subsea, under the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Will Zeg power build a hydrogen plant at CCB Energy Park?

ZEG Power plans to build its first industrial hydrogen production plant at CCB Energy Park, having recently raised more than NOK 130 million (roughly $12 million) for this purpose. Longer term, the Norwegian company intends to sell and deliver further hydrogen plants both at Kollsnes and at locations across the world.

Why is H2 production important in Norway?

The facility at the Energy Park will produce pure hydrogen from natural gas, as well as capture CO2 from the production and permanently store CO2 under the seabed. In this way, H2 Production will become a very important contributor to utilizing Norway's vast resources of natural gas in a climate-friendly way.

Where is CCB Energy Holding located?

CCB Energy Holding is located at Ågotnes outside Bergen, where the Port of Bergen will also be situated. The owners, Bernhard Larsen Holding and Norsea Group, have established CCB Energy Holding for industrial development related to CCB Energy Park in Øygarden.

Will Norway's Northern Lights project help grow a new industry?

Norway’s Northern Lights project, when completed in its first phase, will store 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, making it one of the largest carbon capture and storage projects globally [could encourage the growth of a new industry in Greater Bergen].
