Can a 12AX7 be used as a phase inverter?
If you use a 12AT7 in a phase inverter circuit designed for a 12AX7, you will get less drive from your power section. This of course also depends on the power tubes being used, as some are easier to drive than others. For example, a 6L6GC requires a decent signal to push them to very high volumes.
What is a phase inverter?
A phase inverter is an example where using a 12AX7 tube with matching triodes is beneficial. In a phase inverter, one of the triodes drives one power tube, and the other triode drives the other power tube. The unmatched triodes are not an issue in most circuits.
Can a 12AX7 be used as a split-load inverter?
Yes, but it looks like a 12AX7 is used as a split-load inverter, with a 12AT7 boosting each drive signal (though not in a diff-amp configuration, which seems odd), and a 12BH7 as a cathode follower to drive the relatively heavy load imposed by 3x 6550's max grid resistance. Build problems? Read this first. Re: The Phase inverter!
What happens if a 12AX7 is switched to 12AT7?
"Going from a 12AX7 to a 12AT7 in the PI (phase inverter) will yield a change in output tube distortion, touch, and output dynamics in most amps. ... The lower gain is a factor but the larger factors are: • We have almost 10 times the current available to drive the output tubes before the phase inverter starts to break down.
Which is better 12AX7 or 12AT7?
Both types make great phase inverter tubes, but only if the circuit is optimal for them. A 12AT7 can drive a power section just as well as or better than a 12AX7. Especially when the circuit is designed around its electrical characteristics.
Why does a 12AT7 have a higher impedance than a phase inverter?
Because the phase inverter was not designed to deliver this grid current, the phase inverter sees a much heavier load when the output tubes distort. Because the 12AT7 has a lower internal impedance, it is better able to cope with the lowering impedance of the output tube grids when they distort.

The phase inverter tube is playing an important for the clean headroom of your amp, and it should be replaced as often as the power tubes and for the exact same reason; clean headroom. The recitifier tube we keep longer than the power tubes as long as it is noise free and can provide a high enough bias current for the power tubes.

A phase inverter is the last component that the signal passes through before getting into a power amp. And the phase inverter tube properties change how the power amp reacts. The main difference that we can notice is more gain with 12AX7. Or, in other terms, you have less headroom. On the other hand, 12AT7 has more headroom.

The phase inverter tube doesn''t need to amplify the signal, but it needs to keep as much current as possible running to the banks. 12AX7 brings more volume and hair at first, but the sound begins to "fall apart" when the amp gets turned up for the power tubes to break up. 12AT7 holds everything together more smoothly and sends more current to the power tubes more efficiently. 5751 works ok in the PI, I''d rather save it for V1/V2.
