How does backlighting work in portable device displays?
Backlighting in portable device displays has historically uti-lized difficult-to-power cold cathode-fluorescent (CCFL) tubes. The tubes run on alternating current (AC) and need a large initial voltage of typically greater than 1 kV in order to fire them. Once they have fired, their operating voltage drops to under a kV.
Why do you need a backlight LED-driver?
Many of today’s portable electronics require backlight LED-driver solutions with the following features: direct control of current, high efficiency, PWM dimming, over-voltage protection, load disconnect, small size, and ease of use.
Why do LED drivers need a ballast resistor?
Driving LEDs in parallel requires a ballast resistor in each LED string, which leads to lower efficiency and uneven current matching. Battery life is critical in portable applications. For an LED driver to be useful, it must be efficient. An efficiency mea-surement of an LED driver differs from that of a typical power supply.
What is a LED backlight & how does it work?
LEDs operate at low voltages of 3V TO 4V each and are extremely durable. They produce a brighter light whose spectral content can be more easily custom tailored to the needs of the backlight. Their brightness can be easily controlled to compensate for changes in ambient light.
What packages does lp8556 come in?
The LP8556 device is available in two packages: DSBGA and QFN.
