Does South Asia still need electricity?
While Asia as a whole has made significant progress in providing energy in recent years, South Asia still has large populations without access to electricity and clean cooking. Except for Bhutan and the Maldives, countries in South Asia need to increase their efforts in providing electricity access, particularly in rural areas (Figure 1).
How much energy will South Asia save by 2030?
Some of the larger economies in South Asia have energy saving potential from 10–20 percent by 2030.12 If realized, this can result in significant energy and financial savings for countries. For example, it is estimated that energy efficiency interventions in Pakistan could yield savings of USD 10 billion by 2030.13
Could a gas expansion be a viable option for Southeast Asia?
The remaining demand could be met by the proposed gas expansion; however, there would be significant costs to doing so. The LCOE for solar PV and onshore wind in Southeast Asian countries is becoming increasingly competitive compared to gas.
Is solar a viable alternative to gas power in Southeast Asia?
Renewable energy is a growing and viable alternative to gas power. Southeast Asia’s planned solar and wind capacity could meet over half of the additional power needed by 2030. Current benchmark levelized costs of electricity (LCOEs) in Southeast Asia show that solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind are cost competitive with new gas power plants.
Is CCS a viable source of low-carbon energy in Southeast Asia?
CCS is largely unproven and has a mixed track record where it has been applied. Renewable energy, how-ever, is an increasingly viable source of low-carbon power for regions like Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia has remarkable untapped potential for solar and wind energy.
Should Southeast Asia have a regional power grid?
Southeast Asian nations have been discussing the possibility of a regional power grid, the ASEAN Power Grid. The initial agreement, signed in 1997, cited the goals of economic efficiency and energy security; these have since been expanded to include environ-mental benefits due to climate change concerns.
