Design of the generator room in a substation

The generator room should be clean, dry, well-lit, well-ventilated. Care must be taken to ensure heat, smoke, oil vapor, engine exhaust fumes, and other emission do not enter into the room. Insulating materials used in the room should be of the non-flammable/flame retardant class. It should be close to the substation of the building, which is convenient for wiring, reducing power loss and facilitating operation management; e. It should not be located directly below the toilet, bathroom or other places …

What are the design requirements for a substation?

The guideline covers basic design requirements for associated architectural, mechanical and electrical systems. Separate the room from occupied spaces or provide sound-proofing so the 60 Hz hum is not audible to occupants (sound level of 40dB or less) in adjacent areas, including those rooms above and below the substation room.

How to design a genset room?

Furthermore, the floor and base of the room should be designed for the static and dynamic weight of the genset. The door width/height of the genset room should be such that the genset and its equipment can easily be moved into the room. Genset equipment (fuel tank, silencer, etc.) should be positioned close to the genset (Figure 1).

What is a main substation?

Main Substation. A substation which provides the interface between the source of power (power grid, utility, or generating plant) and the plant electrical distribution system. Substation. A grouping of equipment for the supply and control of electrical power either to an electrical distribution system or directly to utilization equipment.

What is the layout of equipment in a generator room?

2. Layout of equipment in the machine room: The equipment layout shall be based on the unit capacity and number of units, and shall be compact, economical and reasonable, safe and easy to maintain. When there is only one unit in the generator room, if the unit capacity is 500kW or less, there is generally no control room.

Can emergency power system equipment be located in a substation room?

Do not locate emergency or standby power system equipment, including transfer switches and panels, in the unit substation room. Level 1 Emergency Power Supply System equipment shall not be installed in the same room with the normal power service equipment, per NFPA 110.

Does a substation room need a transformer vault?

When the electrical service to the building is a medium voltage, loop style circuit, the substation room shall be designed as a transformer vault as required by NFPA 70 Article 450 (NEC). Provide fire rated doors and walls which extend to the deck above. Required fire ratings shall apply to room floors, decks above and associated steel structure.
