Can you mix different capacity lithium batteries?
Yes, you can mix different capacity lithium batteries, whether a normal 12V 100Ah battery or a Lithium server rack battery. You can combine different capacity batteries in parallel. You cannot combine different capacity batteries in series. There are a few points you need to consider when wiring in parallel. Let’s explore these three points.
Do multi-pack batteries need to be matched?
Cells in multi-packs must be matched, especially when used under heavy loads. (See BU-803a: Cell Mismatch, Balancing). The single-cell configuration is the simplest battery pack; the cell does not need matching and the protection circuit on a small Li-ion cell can be kept simple.
How many volts does a battery pack produce?
Portable equipment needing higher voltages use battery packs with two or more cells connected in series. Figure 2 shows a battery pack with four 3.6V Li-ion cells in series, also known as 4S, to produce 14.4V nominal. In comparison, a six-cell lead acid string with 2V/cell will generate 12V, and four alkaline with 1.5V/cell will give 6V.
Are five 12 volt batteries in series safe?
Low voltage cutoffs might not be safe for five 12 volt batteries in series. Depending on chemistry, Lithium batteries in nominal 12 volt packs can reach in excess of 70 volts when fully charged.
How many cells are in the battery pack?
The battery pack is made up of 15 cells in total, arranged in 3 parallel groups connected in series, with each parallel group containing 5 cells.
