Couch Concerts began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to provide disaffected musicians with a platform on which to perform. It worked! The project has subsequently grown and set the ambitious goal of becoming not just a helping hand, but a benchmark for quality and excellence in live, and online, musical entertainment.
The internet has changed many aspects of our modern lives and we believe it can also enhance your live music experience. No longer are you limited by your location - anyone can soak up the magic of a live show from the comfort of their homes without worrying about parking, traffic, the kids or expensive food!
Kick back your way and discover some of South Africa’s best musicians, right from the comfort of your couch!
Jarryd West, amongst many other things, is the other Founder of Couch Concerts. Crucial to the growth and success of the project was his experience in audio engineering, mixing and editing which he utilised to help musicians transition from performing in a live context, to an online one. You may have even heard him before as he has featured as a drummer & percussionist on the musicals “West Side Story” and “Matilda, the Musical” - in addition to countless jazz performances. Keep an eye out, you may even see him perform on Couch Concerts!
Jessica West is an experienced freelance pianist, accompanist, chamber musician, performer and piano teacher. Her performance history includes both classical and jazz music styles, with a particular interest in chamber music ensembles. Couch Concerts was born during the initial COVID-19 lockdown, as a means of continuing performances despite physical restrictions imposed on artists. This resulted in the broadcasting of 19 live-streamed chamber music concerts from our tiny lounge. An absolute highlight on this journey has been our Couch Concerts Christmas Special (2020), which culminated in a chamber orchestra performance of Paul Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”.
