Cairo Photovoltaic Panel Power Generation Project

Egypt Solar PV Project is a ground-mounted solar project. The project is expected to generate 29,784,000MWh electricity to offset 14,000,000t of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) a year. The project construction is expected to commence from 2025. This is followed by 36.0, 15.3, 25.7 and 80 TWh/y through photovoltaic panels (PV), bioenergy, geothermal and hydro power, respectively (DLR, 2005). Despite this, according to the most recent annual report issued in 2018 by the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC), Egypt''s total current installed power generation capacity is around 54.5 GW.

What is Egypt PV?

Egypt PV seeks to open markets for small-scale PV systems, which are solar plants with a capacity below 500kW and a life span of 25 years. Business Today Egypt sat down with Dr. Hend Farouh, the national project manager, to learn more about the project and how it has tackled technical and non-technical barriers to advance solar projects in Egypt.

Where can solar power be developed in Egypt?

Utility-scale PV development has, thus far, clustered around Aswan in the south of the country, where solar resources are strongest and there is plenty of land for development. The biggest chunk of Egyptian solar capacity is provided by the Benban project, which lies 50 km from Aswan and is one of the world’s biggest PV sites.

Is empower preparing a solar investment with multinationals in Egypt?

Empower is currently preparing three solar investments with multinationals operating in Egypt “that are seeking to decarbonize their operations while at the same time securing a competitive electricity tariff over time,” said Empower Chief Executive Officer Terje Osmundsen.

How much solar power does Egypt have?

The biggest chunk of Egyptian solar capacity is provided by the Benban project, which lies 50 km from Aswan and is one of the world’s biggest PV sites. Official figures on its capacity vary from 1.4 GW up to 1.8 GW, with the confusion apparently centering on the scope for expansion of some individual elements.

How will EEHC power a hydrogen plant in Egypt?

That is set to be powered by PV and wind capacity and ACWA Power said it already has an Egyptian PV and wind development pipeline of 1.4 GW. The hydrogen plant will connect to the grid via the same 220 kV transmission line as Benban, with all power sold under a 25-year PPA to the EEHC.

Will Egypt's PV market open up soon?

Voltalia expects the Egyptian PV market to open up very soon, however, because there was power rationing for two hours per day during the winter, due to a lack of natural gas feedstock for thermal power plants and a lack of foreign currency to buy gas, the Scatec representative said.
